At a time when many industries have taken a hit, the environmental sector continues to thrive\u2013and it\u2019s projected to grow even faster than average in the future.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we\u2019ll take a closer look at what\u2019s behind this trend.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What are Environmental Jobs?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To start with, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/report\/green-jobs-towards-sustainable-work-low-carbon-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)<\/a> defines environmental or green jobs as \u201caimed at substantially preserving or restoring economic quality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, it\u2019s hard to give specific descriptions for environmental jobs because they\u2019re incredibly diverse. Some examples would be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conservational scientists<\/li>\n<li>Urban planners<\/li>\n<li>Environmental policy makers<\/li>\n<li>Solar photovoltaic installers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even companies that aren\u2019t directly involved with the environment have openings for so-called green jobs, with many hiring sustainability specialists and carbon analysts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Job Outlook for the Environmental Sector<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For the past few years, the job outlook for the environmental sector has been very positive.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/brussels\/information-resources\/news\/WCMS_785635\/lang--en\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Labor Organization (ILO)<\/a>, more than 20 million jobs will be created worldwide by 2030 as climate change policies increase and renewable energy sources become more common.<\/p>\n<p>In Canada, it\u2019s estimated that the environmental sector will <a href=\"https:\/\/eco.ca\/new-reports\/environmental-labour-demand-outlook\/\">grow by 8%<\/a> from 2020 to 2030. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics came to a similar conclusion, predicting that several environmental jobs will see above average growth over the next ten years.<\/p>\n<p>The fastest growing industry in the environmental sector would be energy and renewables. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenbiz.com\/article\/how-linkedin-sees-growing-green-job-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn even noted<\/a> that renewables and environment jobs are starting to replace oil and gas jobs. While oil and gas jobs outnumbered environment jobs by 5:1 in 2015, the ratio changed to 2:1 in 2020. By 2023, it\u2019s likely that jobs in renewables will outnumber oil and gas jobs already.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s Behind the Rise of Environmental Jobs?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are several factors driving the growth of the environmental sector:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A significant number of workers in mid- and senior-level roles are about to retire or switch careers. <\/strong>As much as <a href=\"https:\/\/eco.ca\/new-reports\/environmental-labour-demand-outlook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">30% of the total environmental workforce<\/a> might see some turnover in the next few years. This will open up opportunities for other workers to move up the career ladder.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Environmental issues such as climate change are becoming more urgent. <\/strong>International organizations and governments are already enacting climate change policies, and they\u2019ve even come up with yearly goals for reducing their carbon footprint.<\/li>\n<li><strong>People are becoming increasingly committed to environmental causes. <\/strong>There\u2019s a greater awareness of environmental issues among the public. A lot of people are already passionate about environmental activism and green products, and they\u2019re interested in careers that align with these.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Companies are adjusting their business practices to be more sustainable. <\/strong>In response to consumers, more companies are recognizing their environmental impact and even changing their operations and releasing new products to fit the green economy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If we\u2019re talking about job markets, we can\u2019t leave out the COVID-19 pandemic, which is an unprecedented event with huge consequences on the world of work.<\/p>\n<p>For one, it has caused one of the worst job crises in our lifetime globally. In developed countries alone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-07-07\/oecd-says-jobs-market-has-only-recovered-half-of-pandemic-damage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">22 million jobs were gone<\/a> by the end of 2020, while the number goes up to 114 million if we consider worldwide. Even now, as some countries are already moving towards a post-pandemic phase, the economy still hasn\u2019t fully recovered, and the future remains uncertain, with lockdowns and outbreaks still not ruled out.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, the forecast for the environmental sector remains positive. After all, the pandemic didn\u2019t eliminate any of the factors that were driving job growth there.<\/p>\n<p>Some companies hiring for environmental positions have even said that there\u2019s actually a lack of applicants, possibly because job candidates weren\u2019t aware of open positions. Even with the emphasis on remote work, many environmental roles continue to thrive, such as management and social media roles for green companies.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A Bright Future for Environmental Jobs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As the pandemic eases, the environmental sector is likely to grow even more, especially with the rising demand for skills in STEM.
